Where Saints' Derek Carr contract ranks after Trevor Lawrence extension (1)

The New Orleans Saints gave Derek Carr a big bag in 2023, but how does his contract compare to others around the league? With more and more young passers inking long-term extensions, Carr’s number keeps falling down as the market evolves. Still, it’s tough to minimize Carr’s $150 million deal (which came with $100 million in total guarantees, $60 million of which were guaranteed at signing).

Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension worth $275 million, including $200 million in total guarantees and $142 million fully guaranteed, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. And those numbers push Carr down a bit. That doesn’t mean the Saints signed him to a good contract, but it does add context given what other quarterbacks are being paid. Here are the top 20 quarterback contracts in the wake of Lawrence’s big deal, including Carr:

While Burrow and Lawrence have equal average annual salaries now, Burrow wins the tiebreaker in the highest-paid quarterback competition given his $146.5 million in full guarantees, compared to Lawrence’s $142 million.

Cousins edges out Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes here. They’re tied in average annual salary at $45 million, but Cousins’ contract includes $90 million fully guaranteed compared to Mahomes’ $63.1 million. Mahomes beats Cousins in total guarantees ($141 million versus $100 million) due to the length of his deal, 10 years.

Prescott, Los Angeles’ Matthew Stafford and New York’s Daniel Jones each average $40 million in annual salary and are listed in order of full guarantees as a tiebreaker. Prescott, who is entering the final season of his contract, signed for $95 million fully guaranteed, Jones signed for $81 million and Stafford signed for $63 million.

Tied with New Orleans’ Derek Carr in average annual salary, Rodgers wins the tiebreaker here with $75 million fully guaranteed in his deal compared to Carr’s $60 million.
