    SHORT TERM FORECAST

    WFMZ-TV 69News Weather (17)

TONIGHT: Partly cloudy, warm, and muggy with a shower or thunderstorm before midnight. Low: 73

SUNDAY: Hazy, hot, and humid and the final day of our heat wave; watch for some gusty afternoon t-storms with strong winds and hail. High: 93

SUNDAY NIGHT: A few gusty evening t-storms, otherwise partly to mostly cloudy, warm, and muggy. Low: 68

    FORECAST SUMMARY

The end of our week-long heat wave is finally in sight, with one more day of 90-something-degree heat and humidity Sunday, which will put the exclamation point on an extended opening volley of sticky and steamy summer weather. As promised, pop-up t-storms were a little more numerous the past couple afternoons and evenings, mostly in the Poconos Friday evening and hit or miss area-wide through Saturday evening. Reading hit the 100° mark on Saturday, the first triple-digit high in over a decade, and first June 100-degree day in about 70 years. For everyone else, highs were in the mid 90s, and it felt like 100-degrees when the higher humidity was factored in. An approaching cold front could lead to our best chance of t-storms yet, for Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, with the slight chance of some gusty winds and hail with any storms. Not only will the storms cool us off, but can provide some increasingly needed rain as the dryness continues to grow across the Mid-Atlantic. Our cold front will sweep the heat, humidity, and storms out to sea Sunday night, leading to a shot of less hot and less humid air for the start of the new work week. While highs will still be in the mid to upper 80s, it will be less humid and therefore much more comfortable than it has been this week. The 90-degree heat sneaks back for one day on Wednesday, before another cold front brings a few storms (Wednesday afternoon and overnight), then another shot of still warm but more comfortable air later this week.

    DETAILED FORECAST

    TONIGHT

There will be a few scattered showers and a t-storm or two through this evening, but any activity will be more miss than hit as many stay dry, with partly cloudy skies otherwise expected to be the rule. Look for a warm and sticky night with muggy overnight lows in the low 70s.

    SUNDAY

Depending on where you are, this will be the sixth or seventh day of our heat wave, but it will also be the final day. Look for hazy sun through early afternoon to get us back up to around 90-95 degrees, maybe not quite as hot as the last few days. That's because clouds increase in the afternoon and evening and there's our best chance all week for some scattered showers and storms. There's also the slight risk for some severe storms, with strong winds and hail the main concern. The timing would be anytime from mid-afternoon through mid-evening. While we hope to keep the severe weather away, we do increasingly need the rain, and this may be one of only two shots in our forecast. So here's hoping for some rain, and some relief from this week-long heat wave. T-storms will be swept offshore overnight, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and muggy air remaining in place, and lows in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.

    MONDAY AND TUESDAY

Here comes the largely welcome relief, with increasingly comfortable air building in behind our front for Monday and Tuesday. We'll also break the streak of 90-degree highs, with highs expected to be in the mid 80s on Monday, inching up to the upper 80s on Tuesday. Expect clearing skies on Monday, and while there may be a spotty shower or rumble of thunder as the comfier air is building in, most of the day is dry. Tuesday should be mostly sunny and quite pleasant, and still rather warm, just not as hot and much less humid.

    WEDNESDAY

The heat comes back on Wednesday, but it's one day and done this time, not a week long heat wave. Look for partly sunny skies and a 1-day encore of the heat and humidity with low 90s expected Wednesday afternoon. A second cold front will approach and may touch off a few t-storms, either in the afternoon or evening. But another shot of comfier air should follow for the end of the week.

    THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

After a brief encore of heat Wednesday, we'll enjoy an encore of 80-something-degree highs and lower humidity to close out the week. Afternoon highs both Thursday and Friday will dial back to the more seasonable mid to upper 80s amid lower humidity - wonderful! Nighttime lows will also be refreshing - dropping into the lower 60s and possibly upper 50s. It'll also be a pleasant close to the week with partly to mostly sunny skies. The higher humidity and higher rain chances may creep back towards next weekend.
