SPRINGFIELD UNION, SPRINGFIELD, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1966 SPORTS SPORTS THE Among the Schoolboys Ludlow Coach Lauds His Lions By GARRY BROWN Union Sports Writer Chick Patullo has seen his Ludlow High School foothall teams play many a good game in his 10 years as coach. So, when he says was the finest game ever by a team of the statement carries weight. That's just how he described last Saturday's 24-6 convincer against South Hadley in a idseason clash of Suburban League powers. The Lions played a near-perfect first half for a 16-0 lead, and had no trouble from there. Patullo said "our line did the whole job.

They just busted it wide open." Fourth League Victory The victory propelled Ludlow a 5-0-0 overall record, which includes a league leading 4-0-0. The Lions have a half-game edge on Enfield. which has won its three league starts by shutouts. The loss was South Hadley's first. The Tigers had poured over 98 points in games before running into Ludlow's determined defense.

The big victory assured Patullo of his eighth straight winning season. He hasn't had a loser since the 3-5-0 of 1953, in what was his first full campaign. He had coached four games the year before on an interim basis. Chick's lifetime record, including this season, is 46-26-2. Nine of those losses came in the first two years.

Though Patullo has achieved a notable record, this marks the first time one of his teams has been unbeaten this far along the way. The Lions have four games to go only two in the league. Those are with toughies Enfield (Nov. 12) and Palmer (Thanksgiving Day). Ludlow has independent dates with Holyoke Catholic, this a turday, and Commerce (Nov.

5). Patullo and his boys don't like to talk about such things," but it seems only fair to mention that Ludlow never has had an unbeaten season. The school's 'best mark was 7-1-0 in 1949 when Bill Jenkins was coach and a little guy named Patullo was a high-scoring halfback. Ludlow's attack against South Hadley featured cool, smooth quarterbacking by juinor Billy Williamson, hard running by power back Kevin crisp blocking by Jim Wallace, alert play by halfback Paul Dorval, and a flashy display by versatile flanker Tim Rooney. It was up front, though, where the Lions took charge.

Patullo lauded linemen Frank Koczaka, Dave Mitchell, Herm Hageman, Charlie Picard, Glen Fraher, Arky Carvalho, Colin Smith and twins Kenny and Carl Ericksberg for their excellent work. He also has praise for defensive specialists Al Chrisostomo, Ed Mil son and Bobby Thompson. The Ludlow boss said his defense was able to contain South Hadley's attack except for Don Graham, whom he called "a real nice back." Graham, 6-1 and 175, is a rangy one with good moves. Pioneer Valley League Ludlow Cops Ninth Consecutive Crown The Ludlow soccer clinched its ninth straight Pioneer Valley Soccer League crown Tuesday without even playing a game thanks 1 to Chicopee. The Pacers downed Minnechaug in ilbraham, 2-1, and loss eliminated the Falcons from the title race.

East Longmeadow won its game with Longmeadow, 2-1, and tied Minnechaug for secand place, but like the Falcons the Spartans can't catch the Lions now. West Side was also a winner beating Comp, 1- 2-0. The defending State and Western Mass. champion 1 Lions have never lost a Pioneer Valley League crown since the league was formed nine years ago. This year the Lions are 9-0-1 in "the league and play Longmeadow Thursday.

Coach Ray Yando's are also working on an undefeated streak that extends back to the 1964 season. To date Ludlow has not lost a game in 44, in and out of the league. Last season the Lions compiled a 21-0-0 record in winning their third straight Bay State crown. Ludlow started its string after losing to Long. meadow on Oct.

Monson, after suffering through a winless in 1964 and winning only half its games last year has suddenly developed into a prep school grid power.

The Lions have blasted through four teams so far and have scored 130 points to their opponents' 34. The smallest margin of victory was 12 points when the Lions toppled Law-; rence Academy, 26-14, last week. The season opener was a 20-0 blanking of Marianapolis. Then Darrow 34-14, and two weeks ago the Lions erupted for 50 points against Avon Old Farms while allowing only one touchdown. Second-Year Fullback A great measure of the Lions' present success must be accredited to second-year fullback Ron Trask of Holyoke and rookie halfback Bill Polopck of Agawam.

This duo has produced 124 of the 130 points scored this year. Trask whose brother Bob is an outstanding end for Chico pee High, has broken virtually every running and scoring record in the 162-year history of the school. Others joining in the resurgence of the team are defensive tackle Joe Paquin of Enfield, Dave White of Longmeadow, who plays linebacker, quarterback Mike Simmons of Pembroke, Lee Askin, a wingback from Framingham, and defensive ends Charles Anderson and Maynard Foster. Head coach Phil Cardone, in his sixth year at Monson states, "Trask is the best runner I've seen Walt (Red) Kowalzyk of Westfield, and Pol- opek docs things out there that you don't often see." Cardone, who was a star runner and defensive player for four years at Agawam, has the figures to back up his claims about his one-two punch. Granby Clinches' Third Straight Soccer Crown He scored South Hadley's touchdown on a 50-yard pass play.

GRID GAB Thompson gained more than 100 yards, has been over the 90-yard mark all season He follows his brother, Jason, who also was a hard-hitting fullback for Patullo. Kevin stands 5-10 and weighs 195. Wallace was a valuable man, blocking and playing the rover role in Ludlow's defense. Ludlow will get more help this week when backs Ray Lavoie, Tom Haluch and Rusty Houghton come off the injury list. playing with a broken finger, threw two touchdown passes.

Enfield coach Joe Lamana said "Minnechaug gave us a corker of a game and we expect the same from South Hadley. They're always up for us.

We look for a lot of trouble." Enfield beat Minnechaug, 18-0, and has allowed only eight points all season. That was in an 8-2 opening loss to Catholic. Gaels have named a replacement for late Earle Richardson who was fatally stricken at last week's game with Longmeadow. new Holyoke Catholic coach is Richardson's former assistant, Ed Lapinski. was a football, as ketball and track star at Greenfield High in the early 1950's.

Tech Booters Post 2-0 Win The Tech soccer team took a 2-0 victory from Trade at Blunt Park Tuesday keeping its Interschool League title hopes alive. The victory set up a title game Thursday when the Tigers clash with defending champion and present league leader Cathedral. The Panthers are undefeated with a 6-0-1 record and need only a tie to clinch their second straight title. Tech is now 5-1-1 and must win to keep their title hopes alive. Both teams have only this remaining game left on the schedule.

A Tech victory would force a playoff since the Interschool League champion gets an automatic berth in the Western Mass. Tournament. Flory to Miss Rest of Season NEW YORK (AP) Dick Flory, captain of Columbia's football team, will be sidelined for the remainder of the college season, the Lions said Tuesday. Flory, a tackle, has been hospitalized with a neck injury apparently suffered during the game against Yale Oct. 15. He did not play in the Lions' game against Rutgers last Saturday. Trask has scored an 92 points on 15 touchdowns and one extra-point success.

The 6-1, 200-pounder has amassed an incredible 961 yards including punt and kickoff returns, in the four games. He scored three touchdowns in three of the games and set a school mark by ripping over six times against Avon. Polopek, an All-Western Mass. selection while playing for the Brownies last year, has run for nearly 400 yards and scored 32 points. Cardone describes Polopek as "a great little runner.

He's fast off the mark and once he's free, it's six big ones. He changes directions without breaking stride and possesses fine balance. My only regret," continues Cardone, "is that I'll probably be losing them both next year." Thus, the Lions, Cardone, and line Ed Baker will be sending a potential arsenal against Cranwell on Saturday. Monson closes its six-game schedule against Lenox Prep next week.
