<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (2)

Hilligoss, Donald O., Sr. Donald, age 93, passed from this life on August 29th, the same date his son left us 7 years ago. He was born on October 23, 1930, in Alexandria, SD. His father's job with Chevrolet, relocated them to Minnesota. After graduating from the U of MN, in 1952 he married Dorothy Wandrey and they began their wonderful, long life of adventure that lasted 72 years. Having attended St. Thomas Military Academy, he entered the US Army as a lieutenant. After a short stretch in New York City he was called to serve as an intelligence officer in Korea. He was very proud of his military service. In 1955, they moved to Hibbing to join the Hilligoss Chevrolet dealership, later Ranger GM, where he was actively involved for over 65 years. It was a great blessing to him that his son, Don joined the business in 1980. He was happy supporting the community in which he lived, especially music and theater. He was honored to serve a year as Titan of Taconite. He served as senior warden of St. James for many years. He was very involved in Rotary and hosted many foreign exchange students. He served on many boards including the Episcopal Church of MN, Mesaba Concert Association, and the Hibbing Foundation, to name a few. He and Dorothy travelled the world from Hudson Bay to Patagonia. They were always happy to come back to their home in Hibbing and Minnesota. Their favorite place was Black Lake, a wilderness retreat north of Cook, MN. As a good land steward he and his family planted thousands of trees through the years and in 2016 the property was put in the Minnesota land trust so that it will remain undeveloped. He was grateful to have had so many years of good health. We would like to thank Fairview Hospice for the compassion and support given in his last month of life. He was preceded in death by his beloved son Don O. Hilligoss II, son-in-laws David Johnsrud and John Marshall, and brothers Bill and Jerry. He will be missed by his wife, Dorothy, daughters Betsy Marshall and Molly Johnsrud, daughter-in-law Cindy Hilligoss, grandchildren, Hillary Ross (Ian), Sarah Hilligoss Moe (Andrew), Charlie Hilligoss (Grace), Daniel Johnsrud (Maren), Erik Johnsrud (Brekke), and Marin Butzer (Bryce), 11 great grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, and dog Bizzi. He left his mark. His legacy will continue. Arrangements are being made by Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 14th at 11:30am at St. James Episcopal Church, 2028 Bob Dylan Drive, Hibbing, Mn. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James Episcopal Church, Fairview Range Hospice or a charity of your choosing.

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (14)

Rubin, Sybil passed on to her next adventure on September 4, 2024 at age 93 1/2. She was a bright light in many people's lives, most especially her loving family's. Sybil lived her values with joy, energy, and purpose. She was always welcoming and inclusive, unwaveringly supportive, loving and optimistic. She volunteered extensively her time and skills with countless community organizations. She thrived on both teaching and learning, presenting celebrated book reviews, as a community presenter on the subjects of Israel and Hanukkah, and developing iconic programs like the Beth El Art Auctions. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Sybil was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba, and was elected to lead her college as Lady Stick of Arts in her senior year. Sybil met Manly Rubin - the love of her life - while in their teens in Winnipeg; they married in 1953. They immediately ventured off to Dublin, Ireland where Sybil earned a Master's Degree in Education from Trinity College while Manly earned his medical degree. She loved their time in Dublin, which provided opportunities to explore various European countries. They then moved to a small town in Saskatchewan where they welcomed their three children- Harry, Caron and Rochelle. With relocation to Minneapolis a few years later, Sybil threw her energy into her new community's programs, her children's activities, and volunteer opportunities. She remained a voracious reader (participating in three book clubs) and enthusiastic traveler into her 80's, bringing her family on exotic foreign adventures after Manly passed away in 2010. She always delighted in attending plays, concerts and other performances. Hers was a life well lived. Sybil is survived by her adoring children, Harry, Caron (Marc Meirovitz) and Rochelle Rubin (Scott Rutzick); sister, Rochelle Pincovich; grandchildren, Colin and Ethan Meirovitz, Shelby Rutzick and Boaz, Amalya and Gilad Rubin, as well as loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Pilju Kim Joo passed away peacefully in Seoul, Korea on August 1, 2024, surrounded by family. Dr. Joo, known to many as "Kim," was an agricultural scientist, professor, and humanitarian. A funeral was held in Seoul. She was born in 1937 in Yeongheung, South Hamgyong Province, in what is now North Korea. She fled to South Korea in 1948 when Korea was divided into North and South. In 1960, she was one of the first women to graduate from the Seoul National University with a degree in Agriculture. In 1962, she came to the U.S. as a graduate student at Mississippi State University, where she received an M.A. in seed science. She then earned a Ph.D. in crop physiology at Cornell University while raising three children. She went on to serve as Director of the seed science laboratory at Northrop-King Seed Company in Minneapolis and later worked at Pioneer Hybrid International in Des Moines and at Stauffer Chemical in Richmond, California. In 1989, she returned to North Korea for the first time since 1948. She later retired from the private sector and devoted the rest of her life to alleviating hunger in North Korea and bridging the divide between the North and the South. She was one of few U.S. citizens permitted to travel to North Korea, where she would teach and develop farms and other projects to improve agricultural production. Dr. Joo founded a nonprofit organization, Agglobe International, to serve these goals. She was also the first Dean of the College of Agriculture at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, and served as Director of the University's Agricultural Life Experimental Development Research Institute . Dr. Joo also served as a visiting Professor at the University of Minnesota and President of the Global Agricultural Cooperation and Food Sharing Movement Association. Newsweek magazine honored Dr. Joo as one of the 150 Outstanding Women in the World in 2011. In Korea, she received the Hankyoreh Unification Culture Award in August 2022 and the Seoul National University Social Service Award in 2023. Dr. Joo was married to Young Don Joo from 1962 until his passing in 2000. She is survived by her children Michael, Thomas, and Eungie Joo, their spouses Elizabeth Warin, Irene Joo, and Rayyane Tabet, and her grandchildren Jason Joo, Jackson Warin-Joo, Alicia Joo, and Maxwell Warin-Joo.

Adelmann, Elizabeth "Beth" Lucille 63, was born the eighth of nine children of Charles and Betty Lou Adelmann. Closest in age to five boys, Beth became independent, spirited and perseverant, yet bright, creative, and thoughtful. Raised in Bloomington by her hardworking family, Beth spent most of her adult life living in Northfield. She was a country girl at heart, raising her three children on a small farm where they all enjoyed the freedom that comes with open skies and fresh air. She was a private person, who made keen observations, not missing the big picture or the small detail. She could find the beauty and treasure in everything. Beth's family meant the world to her, and she had a special ability for remembering those she loved with the perfect small token of affection, whether it be a cute cow figurine, a favorite candy or a funny card. Her role as Grandma was her favorite. She would always join her grandchildren in play like she was one of the kids and made sure they knew what a big deal each of them was to her. Beth has been described as someone with a special"spark" and if you knew Beth, you know this to be true. We will all miss her spark and hold her close in our hearts always. Beth is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Elizabeth (Betty Lou) Adelmann, as well as brother Patrick, niece Lisa, and sister-in-law Marguerite. She is survived by her children Angela (Wayne), Rachelle (Ryon) Simon, Jacob (Katy); grandchildren CJ (Nick), Tyson, Avangeline, James, Sam, Evelyn and Waylon. <![CDATA[Laverne M. Gust]]>https://obituaries.startribune.com/obituary/laverne-gust-1090703587<![CDATA[

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (26)

Gust, Laverne M. Vern left this life with serious doubts that the next life could turn out any better. Born in Deer Park, Wisconsin in 1929, things took a bad turn when he was ten and his father died as a result of complications from surgery. His mother ultimately moved to Minneapolis to find work and sent him to live with an aunt in Glenwood City, Wisconsin. If the truest test of character is the ability to deal with adversity, he certainly proved it. Basically raising himself, he realized that he would have to find his own way to college. He was his high school valedictorian, which earned him a Reader's Digest scholarship to the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. After graduating, he moved to Minneapolis and was hired by Charles W. Sexton Company, an insurance brokerage. He secretly enrolled in a night law school, as his employer had a rule against doing so. He never left the Sexton Company, although it was later sold. Through a combination of serendipity and ingenuity, he was tasked with collecting an overdue premium from a small barge operator in Cassville, Wisconsin. The owner was also a small-town Wisconsin boy, and they became lifelong friends. The Cassville business expanded rapidly, and Vern's business increased along with it until he became one of the most prominent players in the river marine insurance industry. His clients ultimately included Pillsbury, Cargill, Continental Grain, NSP, Riverway, and a variety of other major players. His success was so great that he was made Chairman of the Worldwide Marine Group of Alexander & Alexander, which had purchased the Sexton Company and was for a time the largest insurance entity in the world. While the living he made was impressive, what he gave back was probably more so. As a young man he joined the Minneapolis Jaycees. He then got involved with the Minneapolis Aquatennial during its glory days in the sixties and seventies. He served in many capacities, including General Festival Chairman in 1966 and President in 1972. He and the Queen of the Lakes rode in the Tournament of Roses parade during which Betty White famously mispronounced his last name "Joost" on national TV. In the late eighties, he became President of the Minneapolis chapter of Kiwanis. Like most service organizations at the time, it was men only. He led his board in voting to change that policy. Rather than simply defying the International Organization, he flew to the headquarters to explain what they had done. Not only did they not lose their local Charter, but the international organization soon changed its Charter. Vern served as President of the Armatage Park Association where he also coached Softball and Little League Baseball. He served on the Professional and Allocation Committees of United Way. He received the "WCCO Good Neighbor Award" and was named "Boss of the Year" by the Minneapolis Jaycees. He was on the Board of Directors of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce, the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the National Association of Insurance Brokers, and was Vice President of Hazeltine National Golf Club, Treasurer and Secretary of the Upper Mississippi Waterway Association, President of the Propeller Club (Port of the Twin Cities), a member of the Minneapolis Club, and Treasurer of the Minneapolis Athenaeum. He taught evening Insurance Classes at the University of Minnesota more than fifty years ago but is still remembered by some of his students. While at Hazeltine, he took on the thankless job of traffic and parking for four major championships, including the 1991 U.S. Open and 2002 PGA. Unlike the Masters where the tournament is held every year, parking and traffic can be difficult. The story has it that as Jack Nicklaus drove away, he stopped, rolled down his window, and told a traffic cop that it was the best run tournament he had ever attended. But the most important thing to him was his family. He married Patricia Marko on October 21, 1950. Early on they agreed that they would never fight in front of their kids. The result was they never fought in almost 74 years of marriage. Despite a demanding work schedule and the time committed to volunteering, he never missed his children's school or sports events. He declined a promotion that would have required moving to New York. He provided an example and the resources to allow his children to pursue their goals, but always let them make their own decisions. He was an avid skier and golfer. He loved traveling and going to the theater. When in Las Vegas, he would see two and sometimes three shows a day. He loved life, liked to experience new things, and took a great interest in everyone he met. Vern passed on August 31, 2024, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Pat, his children Jim, Jolene, Bob, and Karen, six grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, all of whom will miss him very much. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue S. at 10 a.m., with visitation at 9. Lunch will be served following the service.

<![CDATA[Star Tribune Obituaries: Obituaries]]> (44)

Axel was born on March 7, 1943, in Kotzenau Germany, and died at home on August 14, 2024, surrounded by loved ones after a brief battle with cancer. In between those two dates, so many people experienced Axel's warmth, kindness, and generosity as a friend, family member, community volunteer, professor, and president of two colleges. Axel arrived at Ellis Island in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty as a 10-year-old war refugee along with his mother, Margot, brother Peter, and sister Petra. The family ultimately settled in Long Beach, California. Axel graduated summa cum laude from Occidental College in 1965 with degrees in philosophy and psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in philosophy and a sacred theology degree from Harvard University and completed his doctorate in theology from the University of Pennsylvania. His passion for learning reflected his own intellectual curiosity and anchored a career helping to develop the minds and moral compass of generations of future citizens and leaders. His career as a professor and college president spanned 40 years. He taught for over a decade at his alma mater, Occidental, where he also chaired the religious studies department. In 1987 he shifted from teaching to serve as Executive Assistant to the President of the College. In 1991 Axel became the 13th President of Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. He loved being a 'Gustie.' His leadership was instrumental in helping raise the national reputation of the college, strengthening ties with the Nobel Foundation, and overcoming the millions of dollars of devastation caused by a tornado that hit the town and college in 1998. In June 2003 Axel became the 14th President of Illinois College. Axel is survived by Loreli, his sister-in-law Aurora Steuer, his nephews Christopher Delaney (Michele) and Mark Steuer (Denise), and great niece and great nephew Maddie and Cole Delaney. A funeral service is scheduled for 11am on Saturday, September 7th at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Visitation at the church will be held one hour prior to the service.
