There are so many adjectives to describe a braided hairstyle: Versatile, timeless, chic, wearable—the list truly never ends. Whether it's a simple braided ponytail, or long, dramatic knotless box braids, there's an option for everyone and every type of event. Braids are great as a quick impromptu style, while other textures benefit from braiding styles that can last for weeks as a protective style.

But no matter your hair type, there's a braid style for you. "The classic three-strand braid is the foundation for all braided styles. If you want to tackle more complex looks, mastering this basic technique is essential," explains Kendall Dorsey, celebrity hairstylist and Color Wow Curl Global Ambassador. "The difficulty of a braid really depends on the individual. Some might find fishtail braids tricky, while others may struggle with waterfall braids. Generally, the more intricate the braid, the more practice it requires."

And not all braid styles are the same. Traditionally, box braids and all of the respective variations (like goddess braids) are perfect for Black hair and textures, boosted by synthetic kanekalon hair to create volume and add length. Cornrows, or straight back braids, are typically the setting place for a wig application or a weave install, but they're gorgeous worn on their own, too. Looser hair textures are suited for French braids or Dutch braids, and everyone looks good in a braided bun or a crown braid. But the best thing about braids is that they're one of the lowest-maintenance, highest-style options around.

Still looking for amazing braiding inspiration? You've come to the right place. We've gathered braid inspo from celebrities far and wide to present you with looks suitable for every occasion and hair texture, along with pro tips from celebrity hairstylists and braiders to help you achieve the look for yourself.

Scroll ahead for 50 braided hairstyle options.

Which Type of Braids Last Longest?

Cornrows and French braids typically last the longest as they require little upkeep, while braids with added features like Goddess braids or Boho braids will require more maintenance.

What are the Easiest Braids to Do?

Simple braids like fishtail braids, straight back braids, and French braids can usually done by one's self in a matter of minutes, but more in-depth braiding styles are best done by a stylist.

"For most styles (like box braids and cornrows), your scalp is more exposed than usual. As a result, it can be more prone to dryness, irritation and/or flakiness. Braided Cornrow Bun

Just when you thought Lupita Nyong'o couldn't look any more regal, these single cornrows added a dimensional layer of elegance to her braided updo. The lesson here? Cornrows can easily upgrade a classic look. But be careful not to pull your hair too tight on your scalp. "Braided hair should never be pulled too tight around the hairline. This could cause traction alopecia. I recommend having a treatment and trim prior to your braid service," says Stephen.

Middle-Part Braided Bun

Getting braids of any kind, but especially the micro braids worn by Zoe Kravitz here, into a bun is truly a test of strength and patience. But once it's up there, don't fuss with it by trying to add products to keep it in place. "One tip I like to share with clients that get these braided styles, is to go easy on products such as mousse, gels and sprays, because they can cause build-up on your scalp and make your braids look old a lot quicker," explains Janice Smith, Unruly hair stylist. "Instead, covering your braids at night and keeping up with simple maintenance can help your style last longer."x

With two thin braids framing each side of her face, she looks like she was pulled straight from 1969.

"A Bedhead fishtail braid is a good intro style for someone learning to braid," shares Redway. "This style leaves a lot of room for error as it is not intended to look perfect, and is also great for end-of-the-week hair."

Patterned Cornrows

It's been a while since Rihanna rocked braids (she's more into the blonde blowouts these days), but her cornrows will always be classic. On this particular evening, she chose a sort of criss-crossed scalp pattern for her look.

The pattern here is what makes it really special, and what Charles likes most about braiding: "A true braider hairstylist will do something to fit the person's face and shape, as opposed to just copying what somebody did—It’s a form of self-expression," she shares. "I love people like going out to the box to not do the traditional straight backs or traditional knotless braids. It’s a very edgy hairstyle, I see people adding beads to it when they leave one out or two by the sides and the hearts and the flowers. It's never the same thing all the time."

Leave it to Chloë Sevigny to bring one of the most intricate (and interesting) hairstyles to the 2024 Met Gala. "This has been a hit all summer, and now going into the fall, a lot of girlies came in for this look—even the long-haired girls," says Charles, who explains that this look trends not only because of its versatility, but also because you won't have a back covered in sweat during the summertime. "With the braided bob, you could do a lot of different styles with it. You could do half up, half down; I even see people come in and ask for space buns," she adds.

Dutch Braid Ponytail

Only Anya Taylor-Joy can manage to make a sporty look seem so elegant. What takes these Dutch braids from giving off real Rocky Goes to the Met Gala energy is that the braids are only on the side, leaving the center part untouched so it all merges into one sleek style in the end.

Cornrowed Bob

It's hard not to be obsessed with Tyla's cornrowed side part. It's the perfect compliment to the chic messy bob, and giving it a tiny bit of edge. it's also great for those who like to oil their scalp to keep it moisturized. "When it comes to the braid styles, the key is to having styles where you can reach your scalp, so you can oil your scalp in between," explains Wright, who recommends oiling your scalp at least twice a week if you have any braid style.

Easy Plait

Tanner Adell's cowgirl outfit from the 2024 BET Awards was completed with this gentle, easy braid in a platinum blonde. And while blondes can have more fun, their hair needs as much moisturizing as any braiding style does. "The main objectives in maintaining braid styles are to keep the hair moisturized, frizz-free. For this I recommend using braid sprays, pomades, and edge controls, as well as sleeping with a satin/silk scarf at night — this will help to maintain the style longer," explains Stephen.
